"As a result of studies, Yoko is extremely knowledgeable about computers. She has a quiet, reserved personality, but the strength of her inquisitive mind emerges with a surprising toughness. Once she gets focused on something, it's hard to distract her attention."
The Voracious Reader
Yoko is a person who is in the habit of reading books. She’s always looking for more knowledge even on wherever she finds some kind of useful information like charts, folders or anything similar. Some of her special items reveal her taste for Japanese comic books, literature and science; probably the main subject she studies at the University. On every description, there is basically the subject discussed on the item and her thought or a comment about it.
‘Unlock the brain’ says "Unlock the hidden potential of the human mind" and makes her wonder what human beings are really capable of; ‘Evolution’ reports the "Mysteries of Darwinian evolution explained" and she can't put this book down once I started reading it; “From sea to land” reports “the amazing journey of early sea creatures to the strange new world of dry land”; “DNA Diagram” is an illustrated book of DNA diagrams done by researchers; “Knowledge Book” is a book on world trivia which is awfully heavy; ‘Take Control’ is “a book for the indecisive” and she’s afraid to read this...; ‘Programming Tips’ looks interesting even though she already has so many books on programming; ‘Get Over It’ is a book that tells you to “get back on the horse” when you fail and she wonders if she should read it; ‘Being Open’ says “Don't believe only what you can see with your eyes! Love is invisible!” and she thinks this is a pointless book... and ‘Simple Chinese’ is book of simple phrases for travel. 'Are you a martial arts master?' What a weird example sentence . . . .
United States and Japan are the greatest economical potencies of the world so why would she care about learning Chinese if she has nothing to do with this country? So, here comes a small speculation to end this discussion. What I imagine is that this can be a way of showing everyone that learning the Chinese idiom will be important in the future. China has grown at an incredible speed these last few years and it made people think if China could take the place of United States in about 20 years. It is a possibility and probably her interest on this idiom is related to its need on a next future.
Knapsack Stuff
Yoko has two occupations and once being a student, she wears a knapsack – or a backpack – to carry her student’s stuff – books in special – everywhere she goes. Her knapsack is black and it possesses a simple design. This is her personal item throughout the game and it allows her carry more items than the others at once. She carries 8 whilst others carry 4 – exactly twice more items. It is extremely useful because she take either more weapons or healing items inside of it and use them whenever necessary as well as supply her items to others. Her Good-Luck Charm is also carried inside of it.
Yoko is very studious but she is also addicted to sports at school. One of her costumes is suitable for any kind of gymnastics while another is for swimming. ‘Exercise Uniform’ is a kind of uniform her mom mentioned before that she guesses they wear them on Japanese schools; ‘Exercise Shoes’ has soles that are too thin to be of any real use and ‘Gym Shorts’ her mom has one like these and she guesses that a lot of old men back home in Japan have a thing for them.
The Computer Technician
Her other occupation which can be her main trade is a computer technician. Her huge knowledge about computers leaded her to work at the personal Laboratory of William Birkin inside one of the Umbrella’s facilities around Raccoon City. She was employed as trainee during two years until the moment that the Outbreak happened. This is the reason why she knows the whole laboratory of Below Freezing Point and is well known among the employees of Umbrella Corporation including Carter, Monica and Linda; characters that she meets during her escape or out of the town. Besides the ‘Programming Tips’, there are three other items related to her trade. First one is the ‘High-capacity HDD’ that is placed on a strange place; the second is the ‘Floppy Disk’ which says 'TOP SECRET' on the label which she wonders what's on it.... Probably just a virus....; the third, ‘Lab Uniform’, looks a company uniform that has been designed for quick changing. Why is this so nostalgic to her?
Yoko may not appear wearing glasses throughout the game but she has a kind of problem related to her sight as a consequence of her trade. Her comment about ‘Advanced Glasses’ is “Why would you want zoom lenses and a bottle opener on your glasses?”; about ‘Thick Glasses’, “then lenses are so powerful... they make me dizzy” about; ‘Headache Medicine’, the bestselling Umbrella-made pain reliever, “I feel like... I'm about to remember something... But what?” and about ‘Gold Glasses’, pair of shiny gold-rimmed glasses, “the name 'Greg' is engraved on the frame. Greg? Could it be . . .” Those who paid attention on the “Outbreak Intro” movie already knows that she was wearing glasses when she passes near David and Cindy when going to the restroom but these items suggest her strong need of it because her headache can be related to not using glasses properly.
